A Better way to Chip Seal Pavements
Asphalt emulsion chip seals
have been used as surface treatments for roads for many years. Over the
past 25 years many state and local agencies have realized the benefit of
adding polymers to their asphalt emulsions when constructing chip seals.
Now, many agencies routinely specify polymer modified asphalt emulsions
for chip seals, slurry seals and other surface treatments.
Polymer modified asphalt
emulsions can be produced at the emulsion manufacturer's facility or field
blended in the contractor's pressure distributor by adding Rub-R-Road SBR
latex compounds to standard unmodified asphalt emulsions. Rub-R-Road latex
compounds are dispersions of microscopic polymer particles suspended in
water which mix rapidly with asphalt emulsions with mild agitation.
Polymer modified asphalt
emulsions made with Rub-R-Road latex compounds have superior low temperature
ductility properties which are critical for winter performance. Properly
constructed surface treatments installed with polymer modified asphalt
emulsions using Rub-R-Road SBR latex compounds resist aggregate loss caused
by moisture and low winter temperatures and bleeding caused by high summer
temperatures. Adding Rub-R-Road SBR latex compounds to asphalt emulsions
typically adds years of superior performance to surface treatments.
